Lessons from a writer: promoting your writing
Promoting your writing doesn’t just include your published book(s). It doesn’t start after you’re published, either. When you buy Stephen King’s next book, is it because you read the cover first or because you love Stephen King’s writing? If Dean Koontz came out with another book or Roald Dahl’s secret safe was opened, revealing a few children’s books he’d planned on publishing (I don’t think he has a secret safe), would they be purchased because they were interesting or because of the author’s name? What comes first?
The answer is the author. It’s always the author.
When you’re promoting your writing, you’re trying to tell people who like your or want to like you that your book is worth their time. The best way to do this is to get your identity out there, first. Give people reasons to want to know what you’re going to publish. That’s how you start.
But, that’s not the end of it all; you know that. Our group panel does, too. Promotion goes a long way, and they’ve compiled a few things they plan to do (or already do) to promote their writing.
How do/will you promote your writing?
I feel that social media is likely the best medium for self-promotion. Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are all great outlets. The question is how do you gain followers? I don’t currently promote my book because I feel it’s not ready (still in revisions) but when it’s done, I’m thinking of starting a WordPress site and then trying to get friends to share the link on Facebook. I’ve also engaged in what I call guerrilla marketing where I print bookmarks with info and a link to my book on Amazon and then stick them in similar books at bookstores when no one is looking. -Tracie Campbell
I try to connect with people who are interested in the kind of books I write. I also write articles once a month to post to my website that feature “teases” about my book. In the end, though, I think it’s all about connecting. Meeting people, talking to them about what you are writing, and seeing who is interested. -Steve Guglich
As of right now, I plan on deploying a social media ad blitz, including but not limited to Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Wattpad. Also, word of mouth via local groups. -Gabriel Gonzalez
I promote my writing by supporting other writers. Like on Wattpad, where I help other writers with scenes when they ask, I read and comment on their stuff and they do the same. It builds a good base of readers. I also have an author page on Facebook and one on Instagram. -Terra Beilman
I’m currently writing a novel. I’m going to post my novel for free on my blog. After that, I will make improvements to my novel, divide it by chapters and story arcs, and publish it as a book and e-book.
As for my short stories, I post them on my blog and I will eventually sell them as a collection.
Another way I’m promoting my work is by choosing this pen name. So, Justin Barter is a marketing gimmick. -Justin Barter
