Reading Challenge… Will you accept?
Sure, you can read a book, but can you keep up with reading? I am a busy person, but reading is a significant past time I need to begin doing again. I’m a writer and I would want people to read my published work, so I need to read theirs. Not just because I’d want it done for me, either. Reading is the gateway to unknown worlds and knowledge you cannot obtain through your eyes. The miracle of the mind is one of the biggest to be taken for granted, but it is truly the most vast, creative and unique wonders of this world.
In order to grasp the “powers” of my mind and contribute, I created a group on Facebook; the Busy Bodies’ Book Club. You know, because I’m a busy body and I don’t want “book club” to make people think “NOPE, don’t have time!” Why? Because neither do I, but I’m going to make this work. Starting January 1st, 2015, I will begin the year-long journey with this group and we will read a set number of books. We will set the number of chapters per week depending on the book and all the numbers and titles will be decided close to the end of December… Until then, the books will pile up on a document I made for the group so we can take a look at what we’re voting on.
There is a lot of aliteracy (ability to read but refusal to do so) going on and I’m part of the growing statistic. Books are being burned where they aren’t being sold (don’t get outraged because you may be one of the causes. And no, giving books away isn’t an option. It actually costs money to do that and I won’t explain it here) E-books are all the rage for those who DO still read and the idea of reading is a “waste of time” for a lot of people. This is no longer a literate society where literacy is cherished and spread. Parents don’t often read to their kids and kids don’t have a twinkle in their eye when they see a new Magic Treehouse book. The twinkle is a reflection of light from the tablet their gawking at.
I created this group in order to allow others in on my New Years resolution. I want people to do this. Even if you don’t read the books we are going to read and you just read children’s books to your kids. Even if you want to start your own group and do something different, I don’t care. I have written a post about reading once before, because it is a lost treasure in this world of movies, television series and technology. I used to love reading, but now I can’t find the time. This group will force me to make time, which I do have. Everyone has time, but it’s up to you to look at what you waste unnecessary time on.
So far, we have ten members. That’s not bad for creating the group yesterday! We will hold discussions, get to know each other, ask questions and whatever else we can think of on this journey, even if it’s only with ten 🙂 Ten is enough, though “the more the merrier!” I’m very excited to start this journey into other peoples’ lives, different worlds and many lifetimes. It’ll be a heck of a year!
I will talk about this journey a lot in the coming year, so even if you don’t partake, I would love it if you would read about it.
I hope you join, too, but it will be a challenge if you’re a busy body! 😉 Here’s the link, just in case: www.facebook.com/groups/busybodybookclub
I’ll see ya!
